Protein kinase C (PKC) is a multifunctional protein kinase that plays a critical regulatory role in a wide variety of cellular signaling processes. It is an ubiquitous calcium and phospholipid-dependent protein kinase. At least 10 PKC isoforms are reported to exist which are classified as conventional (?, ?, ?), novel (?, ?, ?, ?, ?), and atypical (?, ?) isoforms (Ohno and Nishizuka, 2002). PKC is one of the three major protein kinases (including CaM Kinase II and PKA) that mediate cellular responses to second messengers. PKC regulates a number of cellular functions including neurotransmitter synthesis and release, gene expression, ion channel function and synaptic plasticity (Lu et al., 1999; Grosshans et al., 2002; Nishizuka, 1995). The catalytic fragment of PKC (PKC-M) does not require Ca 2+ or phosphatidylserine for its activity.
