The antibody SP11 reacts with normal neuronal tissues named above, but also with a wide range of neuroendocrine tumours like neuroblastoma, phaeochromocytoma and paraganglioma, pituitary adenoma, pancreatic carcinoma, medullary thyroid carcinoma as well as gastrointestinal and dermal tumours of neuroendocrine origin. Synaptophysin is an integral membrane glycoprotein of pre-synaptic vesicles of neurons. Additional to the brain and spinal cord, synaptophysin is found in the retina, neuromuscular junctions, adrenal medulla and pancreatic islets gastric parietal cells and other neuronal cells in the peripheral nervous tissue Synaptophysin, 38 kDa protein in neurectodermal tissue.
