The antibody to CD117 is suitable for the detection of CD117 in stem cells and for the characterization of certain Leukaemias (AML+, CML+, ALL almost neg.) It has been found to be a good marker of gastrointestinal stroma tumours (GIST; see Miettinen and Lasota, 2003) and has been applied for the definition of these tumours of mesenchymal origin. C-kit Proto-Oncogene encodes a transmembrane receptor with tyrosine kinase activity. This factor is closely related to the PDGF-R family. CD117 plays an important role during haematopoiesis, gametogenesis and melanogenesis. In normal tissues it is found in melanocytes, breast epithelium, glial cells and others. In tumours it is found in SCLC, Mamma carcinomas, melanomas, glioblastomas and in certain myelogenous leukaemias. Human CD117, c-kit Onkoprotein, SCFR (Stem Cell Factor Receptor) 145 kDa in WB.
