G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) constitute one of the largest groupings of eukaryotic proteins, and represent a particularly lucrative set of pharmaceutical targets. Approximately 40% of all pharmacopeia target GPCR's and make up the core of modern medicine. They play an important role in all eukaryotic signal transduction and physiology, mediating cellular responses to a diverse range of extracellular stimuli. These proteins are active in every organ system and present a wide range of opportunities as therapeutic targets in areas including cancer, cardiac dysfunction, diabetes, central nervous system disorders, obesity, inflammation, and pain.
