Ion Channels (Calcium, Potassium) An
extraordinary diversity of patterned electrical signalling underlies selective
functions such as secretion, contraction, adhesion, endocytosis and chemotaxis.
Critical changes of intracellular and organellar ion composition accompany
fundamental processes such as gene expression, cellular proliferation,
differentiation and apoptosis. The principal molecular switches affecting
these changes are ion channels. Ion channels are integral membrane proteins
responsible for the controled flux of ions across cell membranes. They
are key mediators of processes including synaptic and neuromuscular transmission.
